Castello Cavalcanti: Wes Anderson's last short film

Waiting for far far away March in which director Wes Anderson 's new film will be released, The Grand Budapest Hotel , we can at least enjoy of his european stories and settings watching this short film called Castello Cavalcanti. Set in 1955, it shows the moment in which Jed Cavalcanti ( Jason Schwartzman) , a racing pilot, has a crash and bumps into his own ancestors. Enjoy!!

By the way, I couldn't help posting  The Grand Budapest Hotel trailer...

Daughter- Winter

Today's recommendation for those who do not know this band, is Daughter, a band from London who had released their first album If you leave  this last June. The English band had already published EPs and singles but it was with 4AD that they have published their Long Play. What you are about to see is their live at KEXP radio station in Seattle.  Enjoy their Winter!

Swimsuit evolution

It is summer. Some of our wishes is to cool down having a bath in fresh and crystaline waters in order to deal with the sticky and suffocating heat of these days. It is impossible, unless you are a nudist, not to think of what swimsuit you're going to wear this season: 'where's my beloved old swimsuit ?' , 'I think I shall get a new bikini', 'This one does not fit me'...etc, are things you may wonder. We can realize the little differences in style and fabrics some models carry from others, and they have a lapse of one, two, three years? Can you imagine if they had a hundred?
Today's post is a homage to the history of swimsuit (specially of women) , how it has evolved from bloomers up to the minimal expression of a bikini, obviously marked by the changes in society and technology regarding materials.
To start of with the first models created specifically for covering the body when bathing, we have to go back to the 18th century. However, it is not until the 19th that we find  a more extended practice:

Women bathing in the sea wearing bath dresses using bathing machines (1825)

Swimsuit consisted of bloomers and black stockings (1855)

Around 1860, two piece belted costumes started replacing the previous ones.

                                                          Later victorian costumes

                                                                              1870
Edwardian models incorporated  a sleveless version

Bathing catalogue of the beginning of the 20th century

1906. Swimsuits get fitter to the body to a better movement in water sports.

1920. Glamour comes to  the beaches

Some of these  were considered provocative, so beach censors were suit regulators

                                                  1933. Here the Jantzen models

1940s. Two pieces similar to our current bikinis

                                                                           1950s

                                                                            1960s

I think that from this point on swimsuits have evolved reducing their sizes and materials. the differences are not so clear as with those of past centuries.  Even today, designers are drinking from this vintage inspirations.
So whatever model you may choose think of how it has changed to become what you are wearing.  Have a nice and refreshing bath !

M83- Wait

Wow, just started looking around to see what was worth watching and found this great video made for M83, called Wait. I know it is not really a new track, since it is from their last album released  in 2011 Hurry Up , We're dreaming.  I had the chance of seeing them playing live in Primavera Sound two editions ago and were really good. Their show is totally different to what this video conveys, its images and evocating symbols make a big part of the work together with the music. Needles to say, enjoy.

Magic and mediums

Another topic I really like is the one concerned with the world of illusions , that is magic. The professionals who have devoted their lives to make us believe what the eye cannot see deserve a special mention.  They have always existed, but a very popular time was the XIX and XX century. Alexander Hermann, Carrere, John Henry Anderson, Robert Heller, Thurston, Harry Kellar and John Nevil Maskelyne, among others, were outstanding references of their time. The last one, Maskelyne, also dedicated part of his life to discover the fraud of mediums in victorian times and showed people how they did their tricks. Here you can see some illustrations where they appear.

Here a little collection of pictures from the past on mediums and their sessions:

Summer solstice celebration

Today in many parts of the world the summer solstice is celebrated. Coming from ancient  times honoring the figure of Saint John Baptist, it also has pagan features. Bonfires are usual on the night of the 23rd of June, giving thanks for the harvest and also to keep away the bad spirits, as well as a symbol to throw the old and let the new come in. In any sense , it is a special night , let's say sort of magical,  in which wishes and purifying rites take place, including fire and water as central elements of the celebration. It marks the beginning of a new season bringing light.

Happy Music Day !

Today is a special day . Although music is important all days of the year,  on 21st of June music is a special protagonist. The celebration of this day was born in 1982 in Paris when Maurice Fleuret  became director of Music and Dance at the Minister of Culture of France. Later it spread to many countries and cities as well.
During this day there are a lot of free preformances in the street by all kind of musicians with the aim of promoting music. So check out if in the city you live there are any events because probably there will... Enjoy!

God only knows

What a day today it was in 1942! Brian Wilson was born in Inglewood , California. Polinstrumentist and main composer , he has given us great songs with or without the Beach Boys. Here, my little homage to one of the best musicians in history. Happy birthday!

Gothic day to remember

Today in 1816, some important figures for literature gathered around the candles in Villa Diodati ( Geneva) to start what would be a challenge and become masterpieces. Lord Byron read his story Fantasmagoria to his friends Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, Claire Clermont and John Polidori. The challenge was to write a ghost story  and the result was Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Polidori's Vampyre and Byron's poem Darkness.  Great day to remember.
